Dreams of Replay

“Magnificent, thoroughly polished movement – – All the focus is on the dancers, and they absolutely live up to the challenge. Every movement from the details of the positions to the tips of their fingers is premeditated and delivered to perfection. The five dancers are almost virtuoso ensemble, both standing out as individuals and giving space for each other. Leinonen’s signature ballet-based contemporary style lives and breathes in their dance, both controlled and energetic.”

– Demokraatti (2017)

In Dreams of Replay choreographer Susanna Leinonen takes the audience to an evocative journey. Music composed by Kasperi Laine and the choreographic narrative by Leinonen complement each other to create a powerful artistic vision. Dreams of Replay asks questions about the awareness of our choices. What if we could do everything again? Would we make different decisions? Would it be just the same?

In Dreams of Replay Leinonen has returned to her previous works. She has built the piece by listening, remembering, reflecting, thinking back and exploring the movement language from her previous choreographies. Rather than re-use the old material, Leinonen has created a new, unique world inspired by the journey to her past.

The result of this process is a piece where minimalistic scene design meets strange and abundant characters, where sound and light work in dialogue with movement to create affective and intriguing images. We are compelled to take a closer look: what is really happening on stage?

“For once, one can say: do not leave anything out. Even the downright delightful duel of wind-up music boxes earns its place through humor. The absurd subconscious challenges rational everyday thinking.
An essential element is, of course, the dancers, who are able to interpret Susanna Leinonen’s meticulously precise movement language not only with perfect technical skill, but also with thought and intention. The choreography leaves no room for chance or unjustified presence.
What naturally pleases a lover of dance is that the power and purity of dance are brought strongly to the fore. This is an ensemble that could belong to any of the world’s leading companies. Classical ballet technique merges with the unpredictability of contemporary dance, bringing out the best qualities of both.”olet esiin.”

– Helsingin Sanomat (2017)

“Five carefully chosen dancers mastered the choreography and its style, developed down to the smallest nuance and subtle detail. — If the choreography is polished and designed with crystal clarity, rap artist Kasperi Laine’s more chaotic work, composed of many different materials, provides a pleasant contrast.”

– Hufvudstadsbladet (2017)

“The choreographer, with a distinguished career behind her, has looked back and returned to her earlier works. By analyzing and drawing on them, she has created a piece that feels familiar, yet carries a new kind of tension. — The work begins with an intense display of skill: a group hand choreography in which even a single misplaced wrist movement would disrupt the entire mathematical composition.”
