SEE | OBEY, a 2015 dance film by Susanna Leinonen and Jouka Valkama, has been busily touring the world. In October, the film was seen in Berlin and San Francisco, and last week at Light Moves Festival in Limerick, Ireland. Even though video projections have been an important part of Susanna Leinonen Company’s works in the past, SEE | OBEY is the first full-blown dance film produced by SLC. In the wake of the film’s success, a new project is already on the way.
In SEE | OBEY, three different narratives that deal with human emotions, everyday events and conflicts are recounted through physical expression and movement. Time is manipulated by cinematic means and the moments that happen in a blink of an eye get a new depth with the help of slow motion technique.
The film uses both professional dancers and almost a hundred volunteers. SEE | OBEY’s choreography is by Susanna Leinonen and the film has been directed, written, filmed and edited by Jouka Valkama. Valkama has also directed video material for many of SLC’s pieces, as well as for the National Ballet for pieces such as the Little Mermaid.
