Lightning Designer

Matti Jykylä

“Space and light are not just tools to me, they are also bottomless sources of inspiration. The thing I probably love most about dance is how simply its abstract expression can so powerfully and purely influence the spectator’s imagination and give depth to their experience.” Matti Jykylä

Lighting and scenography designer Matti Jykylä studied at the Theatre Academy of Finland and graduated with a master’s degree in 2008, since when he has specialised in contemporary dance and installations. Matti has worked with a number of Finnish choreographers including Jyrki Karttunen, Sanna Kekäläinen and Virva Talonen, and he has participated in the creation of over 50 works that have been performed around the world. He is also a respected designer in the entertainment world and has worked with e.g. Kings of Convenience (Nor), Moloko (UK), The Roots (USA) and DJ Carl Cox (UK).

“Matti Jykylä’s lighting builds impressively controlled, 2-dimensional images which merge into a nebulous gray, into which the dancers occasionally leave or disappear.” Tanssi journal, And the Line Begins to Blur

He designed the lighting for Susanna Leinonen Company’s And the Line Begins to Blur.
