Kasperi Laine

“Cooperating with Leinonen is a challenging learning experience for a musician because the music and soundworld is a big part of her works. Our aesthetic understanding is quite similar, however, so I don’t need to imitate a style of music that has been done before – rather I can seek out and create material that really comes from inside me, and we can then build this into a dramaturgically rich and harmonious world for the work. I have made many works with Susanna. Every time my aim is to surpass myself.” Kasperi Laine

Composer/sound designer Kasperi Laine’s work is known for being experimental and original. He graduated from the Theatre Academy of Finland’s Department of Lighting and Sound Design with an M.A. in Theatre Art in spring 2007, and nowadays his sound worlds can be found on Finnish albums and in both theatre and dance works. Laine has worked in productions by e.g. Martina Marti, Anna Viitala, Mikki Kunttu, Egill Pärlsson, Susanna Kuparinen and Jukka Viikilä (Reflections, Orlando, 7/1 brothers, I’ve heard there is a city, Electronic city and King Lear, among others). A number of Arja Tiili’s dance productions (Kiasma, URB), Freak-a-zo (Zodiak), Deadly after dark (Zodiak) and Nobody’s watching (Kuopio City Theatre) used Laine’s music and soundworld too.

His cooperation with Leinonen began in 2004 with Disturbed Silence. He has since composed the music for Susanna Leinonen Company’s works Chinese Objects, Kaira, Grain, And the Line Begins to Blur, Blinded Mind, Touch of Gravity and SEE | OBEY and the commissioned works by Leinonen: fragile | entity, Transient Horizon and Breaking the Fury.
